About Green Gigs

Welcome to Green Gigs!

Updated September 18, 2009: Green Gigs is no longer an active blog. Although we had a good run, the time has come to bring Green Gigs to a close. As such, some of the information below has changed. Specifically, comments have been closed and the statcounter removed. Thanks for stopping.

Green Gigs was founded as a job board/blog hybrid dedicated to helping those seeking telecommuting, eco-focused work. It has grown into a grassroots network of green job hunters who understand the environmental and personal benefits of working from home on behalf of the environment. What you can find on Green Gigs:

* Home-based, green job listings, spanning all industries,
* Interviews with green professionals,
* Job search tips,
* Job application advice from employers,
* Profiles of green job hunters,
* Green living information, resources, and more!

The Minds Behind Green Gigs
Lori – Founder and Editor
As a freelancer and science geek, Lori found there was a lack of free, centralized job information, listings and resources in the blogosphere for those seeking home-based, eco-friendly work. In an effort to correct this oversight, Lori launched Green Gigs in August 2008.

Morgan – Contributing Writer
Writer, greenie, poetry lover, blogger and kindred spirit, Morgan O’Donnell, joined Green Gigs in February 2009 as a contributing writer. Morgan brings her sense of humor, her experience pursuing a sustainable life, and job hunter insight to Green Gigs.

Welcome to the start of a new week. Just another quick reminder that those pesky craigslist ads can get flagged for removal amazingly fast. If there is a craigslist link here you plan to apply to later, copy the actual ad and save it as a file or email it to yourself so the information doesn't disappear before you apply. Today's eco-friendly jobs include gigs for freelance writers, web designers, green sales folks, a marketing assistant, and a customer care rep. Good luck and please let me know if you land a gig listed here!

Hmmm...these were really old so we had to delete them.

Blog Action Day & Green Bid Madness

Today is Blog Action Day 2008. One day each year, bloggers unite to help bring attention to a pressing issue and this year's topic is poverty. As a mother, the issue of poverty and children particularly bothers me. My children have a home to live in, access to some of the best health care in the world, ample food, heat for the winter, and attend a great public school system. It breaks my heart to think of children here in America and around the world that are hungry or die of starvation, that are cold during the winter, and that do not have access to the great equalizer, a quality education.

What bothers me most about poverty is the needless suffering and death of children from common illnesses and birth defects that can easily be treated. My youngest son was born with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia, a life-threatening birth defect which kills upwards of 40% of the children born with the condition, even with the best medical care. My son is a survivor, but I constantly think of the fate of children born in other places that do not have access to rapid advanced medical treatment. Babies who could have very well gone on to have normal, healthy lives die because they do not have the access to or means for life-saving medical care. Another place or time and our son's fate would have been very different, and that weighs heavy on me.

So what can be done about poverty? I have come up with a list below of simple things we can all do, that alone may not make a huge difference, but together perhaps will. Don't worry, Wednesday Green Bid Madness links are at the bottom of this post, but please, read through the suggestions on how to combat poverty before skipping straight to the links. Even better, commit yourself to at least one of these simple suggestions for fighting poverty, honestly, they are not that hard!

1. Make a commitment to donate some cash to a worthy charity of your choice. I challenge you to apply to one Green Gig today and if you land it, donate a small percentage of your pay from that gig to an organization that fights poverty. Some organizations that I like are: Green for All , Heifer International, and Doctors Without Borders. Check them out!

2. If you have children, get involved in their school. Education can be a path out of poverty and teachers work amazingly hard with not enough resources to education our children. Volunteer in the classroom, chaperon a field trip, donate supplies, join the PTO, clip some box-tops, attend a spaghetti supper - not only is it easy, your children will benefit as well.

3. Donate food to and/or volunteer your time to a local food pantry or kitchen. Many churches, schools, and local stores have donation drop-offs available year round. If you don't know of a local pantry or kitchen, try Feeding America's searchable database.

4. At last check, over 9,000 bloggers were signed-up to participate in Blog Action Day today. Visit some of your favorite blogs or try some new ones and read what other bloggers are saying about poverty. Here is the official link listing participating blogs.

5. See the "Free Rice" banner running at the top of the page? This banner continually runs at the bottom of this blog (not just because its colors match my template!), but I am featuring it on the top today and encouraging you to click on it. I get no revenue for running the banner and the Free Rice folks make no cash off you visiting their site. Rather, 20 grains of rice are donated to the UN Food Program (through sponsored advertising) for each question you answer correctly on their site (also try The Hunger Site, same idea - just click, no games). I personally like to change the question subject to "Chemical Symbols", but they have several categories you may choose from. So if you do nothing else, click on the banner, answer the questions, get smarter, and get rice into the mouths of those who need it most! I will play today -how about you?

That is it. Wasn't so bad was it? As promised, here are today's Green Bid Madness links, go get 'em champ!

Whoops, these are expired! Visit Green Gigs' home for new listings!

Welcome to Monday green friends. The new week brings job leads for a web developer, green sales reps, an attorney, and researchers. Be sure to read the actual ads carefully, as a few of them were a little vague about how much of the work is truly telecommuting. Best of luck!

5 Reasons Not to Apply...

The following ad did not make the Green Gigs post cut because it made my scam antennas kick into overdrive:

A website educating and informing Louisiana on everything green, from do-it-yourself home projects, local heroes, and neighborhood gardens, to green laws, organizations, and alternative energy sources... with everything green in between. We are looking for green writers to write weekly articles for our Green website. We are new so there will be no pay to start. Expecting 5000 green subscribers by year's end and 50 companies advertising. Great for journalism students or green company owners. If we get the advertising we expect, we all get paid.

The topics of these regular columns will be as follows: * Turning Blight into Bright * Growing & Eating Natural and Whole * Daily Energy Saving Tip * That Something New & Green & Cool * Our Changing Green Economy * Green Spots for Visitors to Louisiana

Send your resume with a cover letter. The cover letter is important. I want to hear how you would handle this task....looking for creative people who can write. Write and send a short sample of your green writing.

Whether or not this ad is for real, here are five reasons why I would not apply:

1. No pay! The “to start” implies there may be pay in the future, but try taking that to the bank. Oh, and they want “weekly” free articles from you, nice!

2. “Write and send a short sample of your green writing.” I hardly ever apply to gigs that request a free sample of work that is directly related to the content of the site. Providing your standard writing samples and/or a blog link, along with your resume, should be enough for a prospective employer to get a sense of your writings skills and style. This sounds suspiciously like they are fishing for free content.

3. “Expecting 5000 green subscribers by year's end and 50 companies advertising.” Oh, so am I! Other than the fact that this is a sentence fragment (which in itself does not bode well for the site); it also sounds like wishful thinking. If there were already 5000 subscribers and 50 advertisers, maybe it would it be worth submitting an article that would link back to my blog for the free plug, but probably not.

4. “The cover letter is important. I want to hear how you would handle this task....looking for creative people who can write.” This is not an unreasonable request if there was pay involved, but seems a little pushy for free content.

5. “If we get the advertising we expect, we all get paid.” It reads as though they are at least offering revenue share for your work. However, no where is it clearly stated that this is case or what percentage of revenue you could expect. Plus, see #3, there is no revenue to share!

New Feature

I am trying a new feature here at Green Gigs - lists of jobs based on types of gigs. Lists are in the right column, under the archive. To start, there are four lists:

  • Green Writing Gigs - for freelance writers and bloggers
  • Green Techie Gigs - for programmers, web developers and the like
  • Eco Sales/Marketing - home-based green sales
  • Enviro Wild Card - who knows!

I hope this will provide a way for readers to quickly view links in their respective fields. I will try to update these links a couple times a week. Regular postings will continue to list the most recent green gigs across all fields.

Gig Listings - Oct. 2, 2008

Good morning everyone! First a quick heads-up, often craigslist ads are quickly flagged for removal (whether for legitimate reasons or by other job applicants) - for example, two green jobs I was going to post today were flagged before I was able to list them. So if you see a craigslist ad posted on Green Gigs that you would like to apply for, copy the actual ad and paste it in a document or email it to yourself, so you have all the info saved if it is flagged before you get a chance to apply. Today is heavy on green sales jobs, along with a re-post for an environmental radio reporter, and CAD support for an environmental consulting firm.

Wow, you really want these jobs??? They're long gone, stop by Green Gigs' home page for new gigs!
