Green Job Listings - June 22, 2009

I was hoping to get the job listings up earlier this morning, only to find that when I logged on, the internet connection was running at about the speed of renewable energy reform. That started me thinking about unforeseen circumstances and how they can quickly impact home-based workers. Freelancers depend on their reputations and ability to meet deadlines to generate new and continuing work. Telecommuting workers are constantly battling the impression that they are sitting by the pool drinking margaritas during the work day. As work-at-home workers, we have to get it right, every time.

Last December, I had a Monday deadline for a project. I had more or less wrapped up my work the week before, but I still needed to do the last read through. The weather was calling for an ice storm the Friday before the deadline, and knowing we tend to loose power unexpectedly in the best of conditions, I made the call to finish the project and send it off Thursday night. Sure enough, the ice storm was unlike anything I had seen before or could have anticipated. We wound up having no power for eight days and no phone or internet for about two weeks. Had I known, I would have gone grocery shopping Thursday night as well, but at least I didn't miss the deadline!

So my question for you is: How do you (do you?) prepare for unforeseen circumstances when it comes to working from home?
