Green Job Listings - March 29, 2009

This weekend Green Gigs featured the first in a new series of articles, "The Green Home Office", focusing on ways to work from home in the most environmentally friendly way possible. The first article "Coworking Takes on Telecommuting" compares the eco-advantages of working from home and working from a remote office center. Feel free to add your thoughts, I am interested in what works for you. Also, I hope everyone enjoyed Earth Hour. Just for the fun of it, which of the following best describes how you spent Earth Hour:

A) Earth Hour rocks! 60 minutes in the dark, no problem!
B) What a scam! A hollow gesture that doesn't live up to everyday green living.
C) Sure, I turned off the lights. How else do you watch a movie?
D) Dude, Saturday night, 8:30, of course the lights are off, I'm asleep!

Leave your vote in the comments!

Turn them off!

Earth Hour is approaching! Turn off your lights from 8:30-9:30 local time tonight, Saturday March 28, 2009 to show your support and VOTE EARTH. This year organizers hope to have one billion participants worldwide, why not join them? Some eco-folks call this a nothing more than a symbolic gesture, but it is a powerful gesture if we all take part. Trust me, having survived eight days without power, heat, and water in the deep of this New England winter, you can make it an hour! Have fun!

The Green Home Office: Coworking takes on Telecommuting

How green is telecommuting? By working from home, do you completely offset the environmental impacts of commuting and working in a large office environment? Theoretically, which is greener: fifty people traveling to and from a common office space or fifty people working from their own homes?

The answer is not cut and dry. Certainly having fewer cars on the road has a positive environmental impact, but what if you could walk, bike, or take public transportation to a common office space? Not running the heat, air conditioning, lights, and office equipment in a home office has a positive eco-impact as well. Welcome the rise of coworking and remote office centers.

Remote office centers, or coworking, are common work spaces shared by employees from multiple companies. Employers like remote office centers because they know employees are turning up to work in an office setting and they reduce overhead by sharing leased spaces. Ideally, office centers also reduce employee commutes and provide the opportunity for social interaction that telecommuting lacks, offering a choice for solitary freelancers as well. Although coworking and remote office centers are springing up in answer to a need for a bridge between traditional office locations and telecommuting, they also offer a unique option for those concerned about their employment carbon footprints.

Given the option of working from home or a remote office center, there are points to consider:

  • How far is your commute to the nearest remote office center?

  • Can you take public transportation, walk, or bike to the center?

  • Does the remote office center provide equipment you would need to personally purchase if you were telecommuting from home?

  • Do you find working from home isolating and need more personal interactions during the day?

  • How much money and energy do you spend to run your home office on a monthly basis? Is this amount more or less than the money and energy that would be required to commute to a coworking office?

The rise of remote office centers adds another option for green workers. From an eco-standpoint, what makes the most sense for you – working in a traditional office, telecommuting, or coworking? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Profiles in Green Careers: LEED AP

This edition of Profiles in Green Careers features Hans Fedderke, LEED AP and Director of Business Development, of Helios Design + Build. Helios Design + Build is a development, construction management and consulting firm with a specialty in sustainable building practices. LEED stands for “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design” and was developed in 2000 by the U.S. Green Building Council as a way to independently verify and certify green buildings. A LEED AP has successfully achieved professional accreditation as someone who can oversee sustainable building practices and the LEED certification process.

Green Gigs: As a LEED AP, what are your job duties? What is your typical workday like?
Hans Fedderke: As the director of business development it is my job to make sure we are always sourcing new work and constantly bidding projects. I spent a considerable amount of time out meeting with existing clients as well as working with new / potential clients. I will look at a wide range of projects and complete everything from an initial space plan through to final bid for the required construction. Having the LEED AP helps when trying to move clients into greener alternatives over standard construction. Many times my clients have the perception that going green costs considerably more. Through experience and carefully specifying greener options it is possible to green a clients project at little to no increased costs.

GG: What type of educational background is required for your career? What professional development work or licenses have you obtained to further your career?
HF: Educational background in this field includes a wide range. I entered the construction side of the real estate business through development and design originally. Having an understanding of architecture and design has proved invaluable in furthering my career. I also am a licensed realtor in Illinois which has proven to be very helpful when working with clients to understand the value of what they are proposing to do. In recent years I have also taken a considerable number of courses in alternative and renewable energy to ensure I am on the forefront of this new trend.

GG: Are there opportunities for LEED AP to work from home or by the nature of the work is it largely field and office based?
HF: It is a pretty even split in terms of my time spent in the field, working from home, and working from the office. Recently I have found it beneficial to spend more time in the office to bounce ideas off of others especially since we have added a bunch more LEED Accredited Professionals to the staff. Communication with existing and new clients is the key to maintaining relationships and keeping projects on track. This can really be done from anywhere so long as you are connected either by phone or email. A lot of the consulting work that we do as far as LEED goes can be done from home because it involves analyzing systems and operations.

GG: What advice would you pass along to anyone interested in pursuing a career in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design?
HF: It’s a great time to be involved and the industry is still in its initial stages. That being said it can be a frustrating time as well because there are still a lot of issues that remain unresolved. As the industry continues to mature a lot of the green washing that is out there will be flushed out. Working in sustainable and green design was the catalyst that moved my career along at a much more rapid pace than if I had stuck to traditional construction and development. I believe it is still extremely early on and there will continue to be growth and opportunity in the field for years to come even during an overall downturn.

Thank you to Hans Fedderke, LEED AP, for sharing your time and experience with us. You may learn more about Helios Design + Build and their LEED services at their website. If you are interested in learning more about pursuing a career or certification as a LEED AP, visit the U.S. Green Building Council.

The Language of Love…and Labor?

By Morgan O'Donnell - Red Raven Circling

I’ve been reading job ads and descriptions for a while now and I can tell you one thing for sure—the word “multitask” is burned into my retinas. It is so bad that I am considering petitioning my Congressman to pass a law striking it from the English language. “Fast-paced” is another term that seems to be overused in job descriptions.

Seriously, don’t all the ads start to sound the same after awhile? Not to mention, most of the descriptions want a superwoman (or man), diva, guru, master, or possibly a former Jedi knight. In the meantime, all these companies offer is a “competitive” salary and hopefully semi-decent health coverage, not to mention the opportunity to interact with upper management on a daily basis (aka getting the big bosses coffee).

Sample Job Wanted Ad

Marketing/Administrative Assistant – Must be a social media marketing guru and equally adept with traditional marketing methods. Must be able to multi-task, operate a 1,000-line phone system, translate Mandarin Chinese, and interpret legal department documents. Ability to understand U.S. tax code is a major plus as is the ability to brew a mean cup of coffee. Should also know CPR for the occasional babysitting assignment. Whiners and excuse makers need not apply. (I actually saw this last line in a real job ad!)

Don’t get me wrong. I realize that times are tough. I know that it is an employer’s market right now and that there are more people than ever looking for jobs. Some people are even looking for second jobs just to stay afloat. That’s exactly why I think ads that are creative, interesting, and possibly even funny are more important than ever. Come on, employers! Don’t you think using a little wooing will snag you more resumes from truly outstanding and motivated candidates?

Here’s one idea I had. Why don’t we handle the hiring process more like dating? Maybe try it like the old newspaper singles ads. Just for kicks, I’ll use myself as an example.

SWF seeks small-to-midsize employer for long-term relationship. I am creative, sometimes funny, purposeful, determined, degreed (BA, MS), proficient in MS Office, Adobe InDesign, and can learn most software quickly. I enjoy writing; designing marketing materials; making presentations to a variety of groups; seeking out and creating partnerships; and helping my supervisor craft his or her speeches.

You are reasonably successful, able to provide decent wages and benefits, and foster a holistic work environment with flexible schedules. You enjoy creativity, independent thinking, and a good sense of humor. You are a non-smoker who promotes a variety of physical fitness programs. You believe in creating a green workplace, sustainable business practices, and corporate social responsibility.

If this sounds like a match made in heaven, please contact me to arrange an interview.

Now, wouldn’t that be much more fun to find a job that way? At the very least, it would be much more entertaining. Maybe someone could even start a company similar to eHarmony to match job seekers and employers!

Okay, I realize that my desire to read creative and interesting job ads is probably impossible due to HR and legal requirements. Still, a self-starting, multitasking, witty writing, quasi-marketing maven can dream, can’t she?

In the meantime, here’s what I would like to see. I would like to see your creative talents at work. Create and submit your own dream job ad or alternatively your worst nightmare job ad right here in the comments. A crack team of judges -- me, Lori, and a circus monkey -- will then select the best submission (possibly, by actually reading them, throwing darts, or maybe accepting bribes-I prefer chocolate). In keeping with our desire to promote sustainable and green lives (as well as a sense of humor), the winner will receive a recycled (gently used) copy of Dave Barry’s Dave Barry Is Not Taking This Sitting Down inscribed with a personal note of job hunting encouragement from moi!

You have until April 3, 2009 to submit your job ad so put on your thinking caps and start writing! You don’t have to use your real name when submitting in the comments, but we do need your email address so that we can contact you if you are chosen as the winner. Of course, the winner will need to provide us with a mailing address in order to receive the book. Lori and I promise not to sell your email address or use it for any nefarious purposes, but we cannot vouch for the circus monkey, although we doubt he will misuse it either. Good luck and may the “green” force be with you!

WIN IT!

Win Morgan's personal copy of Dave Barry is Not Taking This Sitting Down, inscribed with her words of job hunting encouragement! Write your dream or nightmare job ad and post it in the comments. You may submit as many entries as you wish, but each must be unique and written by you. Please leave an email address! All entries must be received by Friday April 3, 2009. Morgan and Lori will judge all entries and select a winner. Standard contest rules apply.

10 Green Blogs You Should Be Reading

Let's hear it for the small green blogs! Look, there are fantastic "big" green blogs out there -we know them, we love them, we read them. But, there are many more, "smaller" and less recognized green blogs out there. By "small" I do not by any means imply these blogs are less worthy than the "big" green blogs - rather, just the opposite, these are great examples of independent bloggers who have something to say, and say it well. Many of these blogs have very loyal, growing readerships and all are worth a visit. I tried to select an array of green topics ranging from eco-activism, to green parenting, to general green musings, and beyond. This list could have just as easily been "100 Green Blogs You Should be Reading" and I hope you use it as a starting point to go out and explore some of the "smaller" eco-blogs out there. Happy reading!

Coming Unmoored - A divorcee, a cat, a very small floating house, and some eco-awesome architecture.

Ecofrenzy - An "aspiring sustainability aficionado" covers green business inside and out.

Sustainable Echo - A husband and wife team share the ups and downs of living a sustainable life in the big city.

Our Farm Adventure - Self-described nerds building their dream earthen, off-grid home.

Twilight Earth - Two guys saving the environment, no matter what it takes.

Frugal Green Girl - A recovering shopaholic and her journey leaving "materialism in the dust".

The EcoSpheric Blog - A "wandering" green blog - you never know what will be next, but it is always eco-intriguing.

Ecollo - Upbeat, tag-team blog covering the latest and greatest in the world of green.

Citizen Green - Ex-biology teacher on a mission to reduce the world's "stupid plastic crap".

Musings of an Everyday Woman - Living "green" and lovin' it - long before it was trendy!

Do you know a "small" green blog worth reading? Give it a plug in the comments!

Profiles in Green Careers: Environmental Scientist

This edition of “Profiles in Green Careers” features my former colleague and long-time friend Dave, a Senior Project Manager at a large environmental consulting firm. Dave has over 13 years experience working as an Environmental Scientist, an impressive educational and professional background, and is a wealth of information when it comes to environmental compliance and remediation.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics states a “favorable” outlook for environmental scientists, particularly for hydrologists, with a projected increase in growth of 25% from 2006 to 2016. Over 40% of all environmental scientists are employed by the government and the median salary across all sectors was approximately $56,000 in 2006.

Green Gigs: What are your job duties? What is your typical workday like?
Dave: Job duties at my level include managing field staff at various jobs, writing reports, managing financial aspects of various jobs and dealing with clients.

Green Gigs: What type of educational background to you need for your career? What professional development courses have you completed to further your career?
Dave: At a minimum, you need a Bachelor's Degree in geology, environmental studies or a related field such as chemistry or biology. A Master's Degree is preferred, but not required. For entry level and junior staff, professional development courses may include classes or seminars on field work, report writing and client management that many firms offer internally. As you progress through your career, you will need more advanced training. Cleanup of contaminated sites in Massachusetts is governed under the Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP, 310 CMR 40.0000). The system has been privatized, putting the responsibility for compliance with the law in the hands of Licensed Site Professionals (LSPs) who are licensed by the state. In order to become an LSP, you must apply for and pass a test administered by the State. LSPs are required to obtain continuing education.

Green Gigs: Does your career lend itself to working from home, or is it mainly an office and/or field based career?
Dave: For entry level and junior staff, it is a field based career with limited office time. As you progress through the ranks, you will spend less time in the field. Although there are many aspects of the job that can be done from home, being in the office provides better access to the field staff, as well as the experience of coworkers.

Green Gigs: What advice would pass along to anyone looking to begin a career in environmental consulting?
Dave: Understand that you will need to “pay your dues” in the field. The first few years will be spent conducting field work. Field work is the foundation of everything else that we do.

Thank you to Dave for taking the time to share your thoughts and experience with us. If you are interest in pursuing a career as an Environmental Scientist, considering visiting the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics or the American Geological Institute for more information.

Cool thing is, the final "Eco Champ" will have $15,000 donated to a green cause of their picking! So nominate your favorite green person, recognize their efforts and help the environment by doing so. Entries are due by March 25, 2009 and full rules are available here.

Welcome back to another Monday everyone! I am thinking of doing away with the Green Bid Madness posts, I get the sense that the majority of Green Gigs readers are more interested in traditional job listings than bid listings. If you haven't noticed it yet, I do run a search tool located in the lower righthand sidebar that does search most of the major bidding sites. Please let me know your thoughts! If you feel strongly one way or another that I should keep or ditch the bid posts please leave a comment. In the event of apathy, I will stick with my plan to stop the bid posts and spend the time searching for other job listings. Today's online environmental jobs bring opportunities for writers, analysts, techies, and sales folks. In addition, I have added a few market guidelines for the green writers, photographers, and illustrators. Best of luck!

Application Safety Tips for Online Jobs

Did you catch 20/20 this weekend and their feature about work at home scams? If not, it is certainly worth watching and provides plenty of food for thought. The line that caught my attention was the statement that currently there is a 54:1 ratio of scam to legitimate online jobs listings out there for work-at-home positions. This is an increase over past years, most likely a result of unscrupulous people taking advantage of people looking for work in a down economy. So how do you avoid online job scams? Here are a few of the tips from 20/20:

Avoid all envelope stuffing schemes

  • Be wary of upfront costs
  • Do not search for jobs using the phrase "work-at-home" - most are scams

  • Avoid high-paying offers that require no experience

I would like to add one of my own tips that is a little more specific to those of us looking for freelance work opportunities - if the ad is blind, send in a blind resume. I have mentioned this before, but my philosophy is, if you do not want applicants to know who they are applying to, applicants should not be required to divulge their personal information to you. I keep two resumes on hand, one with my full name, address, email, phone number, dates of graduation and employment and one stripped of that information providing no more than my name and a secondary email account. I know this does not provide me with full-protection, but it is a deterrent and I have certainly still been contacted by legitimate employers using this technique.

How about you? Share your advice on how you avoid online job scams in the comments.

Welcome to another weekend everyone! Thank you to those of you who have already taken part in the Green Gigs poll located in the right sidebar. If you haven't yet, please take a moment and take the poll - it will help me determine where to search for these home-based green jobs. Recently I read there are over 100,000 job boards on the Web - knowing the types of gigs you are looking for will help me determine which boards to search! Today brings opportunities for writers, programmers, program managers, and more. Best of luck and please, tell them Green Gigs sent you!

Bye-bye old job listings!

The Green Parent is Looking for State Reps

The Green Parent is looking for "Green Parent" state representatives -one for each state. The Green Parent is a wealth of information for those trying to raise eco-conscious families and here is your chance to be involved. The gig appears to be unpaid, but for those of you with green blogs and who are interested in green parenting this may be a good opportunity. Check out my favorite Virtual Assistant, Jennifer Smith's "Green Parent" page for an example of what they're looking for. If you are interested in sharing eco-resources and representing your home state, visit The Green Parent for more information and fill-out the registration form. Be sure to come back and let us know if you become the next "Green Parent"!

Profiles in Green Careers: Green Retailer

This edition of "Profiles in Green Careers" introduces us to Sara Cardinale, founder of Mama Goes Green, an online retail company specializing in "sustainable products for practical families". Sara's interview seemed a natural follow-up to last week's green career profile, "Entrepreneur". Launching a business takes fortitude and passion, not to mention many hours of work. Many of us may have contemplated the benefits of running a business from home, but what is it really like?

Green Gigs: What motivated you to open an online store?
Sara Cardinale: I had a lot of experience with online sales, and love the flexibility it gives me to stay at home with my children, and still contribute to the family economy. I wanted to provide an easy to navigate site that provides sustainable products that are practical, affordable and make your life easier. All of these items are ones that we have used and tested in our own home, with our children and in our busy lives.

GG: What is your educational/professional background?
SC: My Bachelor's degree is in Communications with an Interpersonal focus. My husband and I have ventured out together in several entrepreneurial adventures, all of which have prepared me for Mama Goes Green!

GG: What are your job duties? What is your typical workday like?
SC: Currently, I am the single operator of the business. Typically I handle emails and orders every morning. Then I take 3-4 hours to homeschool 2 out of 4 of my children. Then we have lunch, and my work day really begins. I pack and ship orders during this time, and maintain the site, look for new products, and handle advertising and social networking. There are constant changes in this industry, and it is important to do my research to make sure I am offering my customers the best options for going green in their every day lives.

GG: What have been the biggest challenges of operating Mama Goes Green? Best rewards?
SC: The biggest challenges are keeping a work/home balance. But the rewards are that I can work doing something I am passionate about. I love hearing from my customers that the offerings on the site are just what they were looking for, and have helped simplify and green their lives.

GG: Does your career lend itself to working from home or is it primarily on-site?
SC: All from home, besides attending trade shows and festivals.

GG: What advice would you pass along to anyone looking to open their own online retail business?
SC: If you are considering an online retail business, do it in a field you love. Don't get involved in something just because you think there is money in it. If you're not passionate about it, chances are you won't succeed. Also, become an expert in your field, learn everything you can! Finally, find someone who can give you constructive criticism, and bounce your ideas off of them. But stay away from the negative and critical person in your life, we all have one!

Thank you to Sara Cardinale for taking the time to share her experiences with us! To learn more about Sara and her business, visit Mama Goes Green or follow her on Twitter. Interested in launching your own business? Visit Entrepreneur.com, StartupNation or Starting Up Green for ideas and tips.
